Description
This main power cable set / battery cable set for the Peugeot 205 GTI / CTI 1.6 and 1.9 litre, applicable to all XU engines but also the XY and others, replaces your worn battery cables and is an instant very good electrical circuit upgrade.
Provides power flow between the alternator, starter motor, battery positive terminal, small fuse box near the battery, engine block and body.
As good as the original in terms of looks, but with the benefits of significantly better current flow due to thicker copper diameter and high-quality cable lugs.
Also applicable to many other 205 versions. At least the XU engines. The battery cable set for the Peugeot 205 with TU engines can be found here.
Difference in phase 1.5 and phase 2 battery cables for the Peugeot 205
The difference in design between phase 1.5 and phase 2 battery cables is only in the length of the green / yellow ground cable to the body. For phase 1.5, this was originally connected from the factory to a bolt M6 behind the battery near the coil. This cable is about 15cm shorter than phase 2, where the green/yellow ground cable was connected to a bolt M6 on the body between the strut and the wiper fluid pan. Phase 1.5 was delivered from November 1987 until July 1990. Phase 2 started from August 1990.
You can also determine your version by the position of the ignition coil. If your ignition coil is a small black block in the middle of the intake manifold, you have a phase 2. Faults caused by worn (too thin) battery cables in the 205
The problem with the 205 is that the old cables are not thick enough to supply the alternator's output voltage of 14 - 14.4 volts without voltage drop across the battery. Especially with heavy electrical consumption from, for example, the lights, fan or, even worse, a heavy amplifier, the voltage on your old cables easily drops below 13 volts. At that point, your battery will not charge. Ageing of the cables in the electrical circuit, and on top of that often corrosion, only makes this worse. Current batteries need the 14 Volts from the alternator even more in order to charge properly and stay in good condition.
Due to the power loss of the old worn thin battery cables in the 205, we regularly see the faults below:
- Bad starting
- Battery not recharging or barely recharging
- Unable to start after just a few days of standing still
- Voltage dips in lighting or fan when other consumers are switched on
- Poor fuel supply
- Weak inflammation
- Slow Moving Wipers
- Fans not running at full speed
- Weak lighting
- Weak horn
- Radio failure due to voltage drop too far
- Consumers such as lights and fans dancing to the bass of the music
- Electric windows that open slowly
- Engine failure
- Short battery life
- etc.
Especially when installing an audio amplifier or other extra large consumers, the original cables are not sufficient and you are guaranteed to encounter the above-mentioned problems.
With our battery cables, you measure the alternator output voltage without voltage drop across the battery. Depending on the charging situation, this is usually 14 - 14.4 volts.

Our battery cables have a high-quality abrasion-resistant insulation jacket that also protects against heat, dirt, acid and liquids such as fuel, oil and coolant. The cable lugs are heavy-duty for optimum current flow.
For an extra safe and reliable connection, the cable lugs are pinched with hydraulic pliers. To protect against corrosion, shrink tubing has been applied around the cable lugs. As an extra protection against heat and wear, the sheath has insulation ring tubing in the necessary places, just like the original.
We use the original size and colour cables. The battery cable set is plug n play and has a long service life that will get you back on the road long and reliably.
The battery cable set consists of the following parts
- Battery cable red between alternator and starter motor
- Insulation cover for connection to alternator
- Battery cable black between starter motor and battery positive terminal
- Insulation cover for connection to starter motor
- Battery terminal plus pole
- Insulation cover battery terminal plus pole
- Battery cable yellow between plus pole and small fuse box
- Earth cable grey between battery minus pole and engine block
- Yellow/green ground cable between battery minus pole and bodywork
- Battery terminal minus pole (cables directly in battery terminal)
Everything is pre-assembled making the cable immediately ready for mounting.
Battery terminal type (As of November 2023)
The mass battery cables now come standard with a battery terminal clamp with wing nut as shown in the picture below. The photos on the website have yet to be updated.

Insulation caps
The battery cable set comes standard with a red insulation cap on the battery positive terminal and a black insulation cap on the alternator and starter motor.
Originally, however, only black insulating caps were supplied. Prefer all-black insulating caps or just red insulating caps? No problem, just leave your requirements in the notes field on the checkout page or contact us.
Customisation
Need a specific modification in the battery cable set? No problem, we can make the necessary adjustments. If you only want a different combination of insulating cap colours, please let us know in the comments field on the checkout page. If you want other specific adjustments, please contact us.

NOTE: If you are not sure whether you have a Peugeot 205 GTI / CTI phase 1.5 or phase 2, take a look at the location of your coil. If it is behind your battery, choose the phase 1.5 version. If the coil is a small black block on top of your air intake manifold, then you have a phase 2 version.

Câbles de très bonne qualité, et effectivement la section est plus épaisse que ceux d'origine.
L'installation n'est pas aisée pour le câble positif mais ce n'est pas lié à la qualité du câble lui même mais à l'accessibilité dans le moteur et au nombre de durites qui passent au même endroit.
Pas facile en effet d'accéder notamment au démarreur situé dans un endroit peu pratique pour faciliter la dépose/repose du câble.
De plus, voiture qui a bientôt 37 ans, donc beaucoup de cambouis et de saleté sur les mains !!!
@Jesper : sur votre site, vous indiquez que c'est pour les modèles à partir de novembre 1987, la mienne étant de Octobre 1987 (date de première immatriculation) mais produite en juin 1987.
Le câble positif neuf semble de même longueur.
Par contre, le câble négatif neuf est un peu plus long ou un peu plus court, je ne sais plus. Mais ça n'a pas été gênant pour son installation.

Installing the new cables can indeed be a bit tough when you don't often work on cars, allthough, most people install them themselves without to much issue.
Mounting the starter engine cable can be done the easyest by reaching it from the side of the alternator.
The building months are more or less an indication. This is how it is documented, but it varies a bit per country. Also, the French during those overlapping months swapt things around a bit.
The dimensions can always vary a little bit in lenght. Also, during those times, for example one month they had a cable produced in 47cm, 3 months later in 44cm.
I'ts all comen for those times.
